- complete one PADI Standard exam

Following this course you will be certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor with limited teaching responsibilities.

Most people choose to complete the full IDC to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. However, you can take the AI course independently of the IDC. If you choose to work as an AI you will gain valuable experience to become a scuba instructor in the future.
Open Water Scuba Instructor course (OWSI) - 3 days
The second part of the IDC is a 4-day program when you will look more deeply into the PADI system of diver education. You will develop practical skills for teaching all courses from Discover Scuba Diving through to Divemaster
You will:
- continue to expand the practical knowledge and skills learned in the AI course
- learn how to teach those skills to others
- participate in skills demonstrations, workshops and classroom presentations
- take an instructor pre-assessment exam
- meet specific performance requirements
- be assessed on your classroom / in-water teaching presentations and skills
- have extra study time if required
On successful completion of the OWSI course you will receive an IDC completion form, enabling you to attend an Instructor Examination (IE)

Emergency First Response Instructor course (EFRI) - 1 day
You will:
- learn how to teach people CPR and First Aid
- learn the specific goals and performance requirements for the Primary & Secondary Care and CPR/AED courses
- On completion of your course, you will be qualified to apply for certification as an EFRI
*Divemasters can become Emergency First Response Instructors! This course can be booked by Divemasters independently of the IDC*
Instructor Examination (IE) - 2 days
The 2-day Instructor Examination is conducted by a PADI Examiner. You will be evaluated on your teaching ability, dive knowledge, skills, understanding of the PADI system, plus attitude and professionalism.
There are four sections:
- classroom exams on dive theory and PADI standards
- confined water teaching assessment & skill evaluation circuit
- knowledge development presentation
- open water teaching assessment & rescue skills assessment
On successful completion of the IE your instructor application paperwork will be sent to PADI for processing. It generally takes about 7-10 days to receive your instructor rating confirmation, at which point you can start teaching.

Prerequisites for the IDC SILVER PACKAGE:
You must:
- be aged 18+ years
- be a certified diver for at least 6 months
- have 100+ logged dives showing deep, night and navigation dive experience
- be certified as a PADI Divemaster (or equivalent from another certifying agency)
- have proof of CPR/First Aid training dated within the past two years (or you’re a practicing medical professional)
- be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months

Dive equipment
We do offer free equipment hire throughout your IDC and IE. However, we strongly recommend that you purchase and bring your own dive equipment. You must have:
- Regulator with octopus, console with depth gauge in metres + SPG
- BCD with power inflator
- Wetsuit
- Mask, snorkel, fins
- Timing device (some skills have time limits and you need to be able to check the exact duration of a skill)
- Dive knife, compass, whistle, blank slate, safety sausage (SMB)
- Pocket mask
- Dive computer
If you have a DIN connection on your first stage, please bring an adapter. In the South East Asian region INT valves are the standard. DIN adapters are available for purchase if required (please contact us in advance).
Advance preparation
- start your eLearning well in advance to ensure completion before the IDC prep course starts
- practice your knot-tying skills before the IDC: Bowline, Two Half Hitches and Sheet Bend.Â
- make sure that your visa is valid throughout the duration of the IDC and IE. It will not be an option to go on a ‘visa run’ during the IDC or PADI IE

If you have a DIN connection on your first stage, please bring an adapter. In the South East Asian region INT valves are the standard. DIN adapters are available for purchase if required (please contact us in advance).
Advance preparation
- start your eLearning well in advance to ensure completion before the IDC prep course starts
- practice your knot-tying skills before the IDC: Bowline, Two Half Hitches and Sheet Bend.Â
- make sure that your visa is valid throughout the duration of the IDC and IE. It will not be an option to go on a ‘visa run’ during the IDC or PADI IE
