Most people choose to complete the full IDC to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. However, you can take the AI course independently of the IDC. If you choose to work as an AI you will gain valuable experience to become a scuba instructor in the future.

Open Water Scuba Instructor course (OWSI) - 3 days

The second part of the IDC is a 4-day program when you will look more deeply into the PADI system of diver education. You will develop practical skills for teaching all courses from Discover Scuba Diving through to Divemaster

You will:

  • learn how to teach those skills to others
  • participate in skills demonstrations, workshops and classroom presentations
  • take an instructor pre-assessment exam
  • meet specific performance requirements
  • be assessed on your classroom / in-water teaching presentations and skills
  • have extra study time if required

On successful completion of the OWSI course you will receive an IDC completion form, enabling you to attend an Instructor Examination (IE)

*This course can be booked by Assistant Instructors, independently of the IDC. Together with the EFRI certification, you will then be certified as an OWSI*

Emergency First Response Instructor course (EFRI) - 1 day

You will:

  • learn how to teach people CPR and First Aid
  • learn the specific goals and performance requirements for the Primary & Secondary Care and CPR/AED courses
  • On completion of your course, you will be qualified to apply for certification as an EFRI

*Divemasters can become Emergency First Response Instructors! This course can be booked by Divemasters independently of the IDC*

Instructor Examination (IE) - 2 days

The 2-day Instructor Examination is conducted by a PADI Examiner. You will be evaluated on your teaching ability, dive knowledge, skills, understanding of the PADI system, plus attitude and professionalism.

There are four sections:

  • classroom exams on dive theory and PADI standards
  • confined water teaching assessment & skill evaluation circuit
  • knowledge development presentation
  • open water teaching assessment & rescue skills assessment

On successful completion of the IE your instructor application paperwork will be sent to PADI for processing. It generally takes about 7-10 days to receive your instructor rating confirmation, at which point you can start teaching.
